Located The Bobby Moore Academy in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, comprises a primary school, a secondary school and a separate Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) facility, split over two sites within the park, all designed to enable significant use of the education and extensive sports facilities by the growing local community. The schools were built as two separate projects, falling within the remit of the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and required to achieve BREEAM Excellent.
MZA was appointed by the main contractor to undertake the mechanical, electrical and public health design from RIBA Stage 2 to RIBA Stage 4A for both projects for the design and construction of the new two-storey 1,900sqmt, 420 place, 2FE primary school and the six-storey 9,250sqmt, 1,140 place, 6FE secondary school with community sports facilities. As part of the design, a detailed analysis was undertaken regarding the indoor air quality to enable natural ventilation systems to be maximised and close attention was paid to the routing of the domestic hot and cold water services and appropriate stored water volumes to minimise the risks of overheating cold water systems.
The site is located adjacent to roads, railways and the flight path to London City Airport, imposing significant acoustic constraints. Extensive work was undertaken to demonstrate that low-energy hybrid solutions could be employed to provide suitable indoor air quality, while maintaining the stringent acoustic performance criteria required for the schools in the design criteria.
The Primary Academy was successfully completed in August 2017 and the Secondary in August 2018.
